The internationally renowned
UBC Museum of Anthropology is developing a new Research Centre as part of
its current renewal project. The planning stage is complex and time consuming,
with multiple stakeholders engaged in making a wide range of decisions at
every level of the organisation.
The new Centre will feature a re-design of the Museum's visible storage for a portion of the 35,000 cultural artifacts in their collection. When making design decisions for this area, balancing issues of cultural appropriateness, conservation, and public access is a difficult task. To help decision makers understand the space, the Museum approached Double Dare to build a partial scale model of their recent plans for the Research Centre. The model simplifies stakeholder discussions about the design of the Research Centre without need to reference complex technical drawings. The accessibility of the model allows for consultation with institutional and community partners, which continues the Museum's tradition of collaborative work and assists stakeholders to develop well considered, informed decisions.
